POSITION SUMMARY
The Data Network Infrastructure Architect role is responsible for creating network designs that support large amounts of Internet connectivity and large internal network infrastructures including a global MPLS backbone carrying multiple VPNs. The designs will also support network segments that contain multiple routers, switches, firewalls and load balancers, and technologies such as VoIP and Multicast.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The candidate will investigate new network devices and technologies, providing recommendations to improve the reliability, security, and manageability of the network infrastructure while keeping up with a dramatic scaling rate. The successful candidate will work with various engineering groups within RIM to provide appropriate network solutions relating to new product and service offerings being developed or extended. At times the candidate will be involved in other networking aspects such as testing and troubleshooting, and will be required to complete knowledge transfers to other team members.
The successful candidate's responsibilities will also include:
• Design and set short-to-mid-term (1-3y) direction for the data network, and work with Senior Architect to deliver on long-term (3y+) direction
• Provide technical leadership within the organization, and drive the evaluation and adoption of new technologies / capabilities to improve the network infrastructure
• Select vendors and products, and complete detailed analysis to support proposals to change the network design
• Establish and document architecture standards for both BlackBerry service and Corporate enterprise networks, including capacity and troubleshooting information
• Coordinate audits of the network, both internally-initiated and vendor-assisted, and provide follow-up recommendations
• Assist in the development and maintenance of monitoring points and capacity plans for all aspects of the data network infrastructure
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Post secondary education in Information Technology related field, or equivalent experience in conjunction with industry certification (Cisco certifications preferred)
• Minimum 7 years of data network experience in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment, 3 of which working in a design / architectural capacity
• Possess strong technical leadership that will be demonstrated consistently within the team, the company, and through interaction with our vendors and partners
• Expert experience with equipment from vendors such as Cisco and F5
• In-depth LAN and WAN knowledge, and their respective Layer-2 and Layer-3 protocols (Rapid-PVST, HSRP, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, POS, etc.)
• Extensive knowledge of firewalls, load balancing, and general network security concepts (IDS / IPS, DDoS mitigation, NAC)
• Experience in managing requirements for multi-homed Internet access and large global IP network backbones
• Comprehensive understanding of MPLS and Multicast, including Multicast within a mVPN; experience working on a core (P / PE) backbone preferred
• Experience working with Enterprise VoIP and Video, and 802.11-WiFi systems, and in Disaster Recovery design considerations
• Experience gathering and analyzing data with a network sniffer, and utilizing network modeling tools such as OPNET IT / SP Guru
• Strong and effective interpersonal skills; comfortable delivering presentations to groups; proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio); excellent documentation skills
• Motivated self-starter with the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team; ability to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities to meet business goals
• Background in ITIL, ISO, CISSP, project management, or similar industry frameworks / methodologies considered an asset
