POSITION SUMMARY
The Data Network Systems Specialist is responsible for designing, deploying, and supporting the mission-critical server infrastructure of the core network service environment. Applications include Authentication, DNS, Logging, and NTP, residing in a heterogeneous environment comprised of servers and appliances running Windows and UNIX / Linux. The candidate will also provide systems administration capabilities for servers located in the network test environments.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will lead the investigation of new architectures aimed to increase resiliency and efficiency, and will be responsible for testing and certifying new technologies both from a functional and capacity standpoint.
The candidate will be a technical prime in resolving and documenting service incidents, will create and execute detailed implementation plans within scheduled maintenance windows, will conduct knowledge transfer sessions with internal customers, and will ensure all necessary support documentation is created and kept accurate. Support of these mission critical systems will require maintenance work to be performed in off-peak windows and participation in a 24x7 on-call rotation schedule.
The successful candidate's responsibilities will include:
• Design, test and maintain mission-critical network services supporting the BlackBerry and Corporate IT infrastructures (e.g., DNS, NTP, ACS, Logging, Arbor, OOB Console)
• Work with network and application teams to determine system requirements, and provide knowledge transfers
• Provide 24x7 on-call support for mission-critical network systems , and create user and troubleshooting guides to enable support staff
• Interface with server platform teams in BlackBerry service and Corporate enterprise departments to ensure consistency on hardware / OS standards, and provide feedback from network point-of-view
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Post secondary education in Information Technology related field, or equivalent experience in conjunction with industry certification (RedHat / Microsoft preferred)
• Minimum 5 years of systems administration experience in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment, 2 of which working in an engineering / level-II or greater capacity
• Possess strong technical leadership that will be demonstrated consistently within the team, the company, and through interaction with our vendors and partners
• In-depth understanding of Linux- and Windows-based servers, including deployment and maintenance in a mission-critical environment; experience with automation systems such as Opsware an asset
• Strong understanding of DNS systems (BIND preferred); past experience with NTP, Syslog, NFS / iSCSI, and other standard network services
• Experience with enterprise-class monitoring tools, PHP / MySQL based interfaces, and Disaster Recovery considerations and deployments; VMware experience an asset
• Experience completing product comparisons and evaluations, including functional and load testing, and interacting with vendors
• Demonstrated experience in system performance management techniques and performance-related system level tuning to meet 'best practices'
• Capable of reacting quickly to problems and following established procedures to implement solutions; experience with proactive problem management; ability to handle stressful situations with a level-headed approach
• Experience gathering and analyzing data with a network sniffer, and utilizing application performance analysis tools such as OPNET ACE
• Strong and effective interpersonal skills; comfortable delivering presentations to groups; proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio); excellent documentation skills
• Motivated self-starter with the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team; ability to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities to meet business goals
• Background in ITIL, ISO, CISSP, project management, or similar industry frameworks / methodologies considered an asset
• Familiarity with ticket management systems such as Remedy to help coordinate / track work efforts
• General understanding of network principles and devices such as routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers
• Willingness to provide support in a mission-critical 24x7 operational environment, participating in an on-call rotation, and performing scheduled maintenance
• Previous systems administration experience within an ISP environment preferred
